EOI: Delegation to Whiria Taranaki Weaving Symposium in Aotearoa, 8-17 January 2027
Kurdinthi has been invited to bring a delegation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander weavers to the second Whiria Taranaki Weaving Symposium in Manaia, Aotearoa 8-17 January 2027.
Whiria Taranaki brings First Nations weaving practitioners together to share traditional knowledge, strengthen contemporary practice, exchange cultural narratives, materials and methods. The symposium creates space to build relationships across First Nations and grow an international weaving whānau (family) grounded in connection, knowledge sharing and the continuation of weaving practices.
The program will include visits to wāhi tapu (sacred places) presentations from participating nations and specialist practitioners, collaborative making, engagement with practitioners from other artforms, a community open day and kākahu toi (wearable arts) event.
Key selection criteria for applications to the Kurdinthi delegation include:
You must be an established Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander weaver who is deeply connected to your cultural practice, community and storytelling though weaving.
Your weaving practice has a strong focus on or connects to intergenerational knowledge sharing and learning.
Able to provide examples of your weaving work.
You must be willing and able to travel and remain with the delegation once you have arrived in Aotearoa for up to 12 days.
Be responsible, or have support available to you, for organising and supplying of passport documentation and any other relevant travel identification as requested. (A form for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who do not have the required identification documents to apply for a passport (B19 form) is available for downloading at the end of this submission form).
Applications will be accepted for consideration from individuals or pairs (up to two people). Joint applications of up to two weavers should be connected through cultural practice, community and/or storytelling and have an existing relationship. Joint applicants are only required to submit one application, however, please make sure your answers speak to both weavers. All applicants, individual or joint, should consider the strength of your weaving practice, connection to culture and community, relationship to intergenerational knowledge sharing and what you can contribute to and bring back from an international cultural exchange.
Funding covers all participants travel (return from Australia), accommodation and travel allowance. Other funded inclusions will also be considered on a case by case basis as needed and where funding is available to support delegation members. The Kurdinthi team will manage travel arrangements and bookings and be the central contact for delegation members.
